Ahwach

Location: Ouarzazate A Brief Outline of the Festival In Tamazight, the term “Ahwach” refers to both singing and collective dances in all their forms in southe Morocco, particularly in regions in the High and Anti-Atlas Mountains. Men and women participate in these dances, adoed in traditional festive clothing specific to each tribe. Men wear the traditional Moroccan jellaba, a chamir (shirt), a buous, and a white turban, along with a silver dagger and an akrab (a leather pouch oamented with silk). Women ado themselves with traditional jewellery made of cast silver and metal pieces, along with an amber necklace featuring large yellow resin beads. This festival aims to enhance the presence of Moroccan human heritage, distinct from other heritages of civilizations in the Mediterranean basin. It also seeks to introduce and celebrate this art and its pioneers who ensure its continuity, while motivating younger generations to practise this art in order to protect it from oblivion.
