Fez pottery is one of the ancient traditional crafts preserved in this city. It is an exquisite form of pottery, distinguished by its blue colour. In antiquity, it was used exclusively for family events. In Arabic, the word khazaf refers to the clay used in its production, as well as the accompanying paintings and decorative flourishes, which acquire a metallic lustre through firing.
The first stage in making pottery pots, as practised by the ancient craftsmen of Fez, involves sourcing clay from the vicinity of the city, where the finest types of clay soil are found. After sifting and filtering, the clay is kneaded and shaped on a pottery wheel that keeps tuing, enabling the craftsman to form the desired shape with swift, skilful touches that reflect expertise and precision.
Once the pottery piece is fully formed, it is left to dry under the sun. It is then fired in a kiln at a high temperature of 1200 degrees Celsius as an initial step. Subsequently, the pieces are handed over to the zawwaq (decorator), who embellishes them using a brush and pigments containing blue cobalt. The decorator creates botanical designs, known as tastir, and geometric pattes, called tawriq, as well as other motifs inspired by Arabic calligraphy. When the surface of the pot is coated with a white glaze, it sheds its earthy hue. After a second firing, the piece acquires a lustrous white layer that imparts a metallic sheen to the pottery.
The fame of Fez’s blue pottery has transcended national borders, with pieces displayed in world-renowned museums. This recognition is attributed to its exceptional craftsmanship, distinctive colour, and intricate decorations. Some Fez pottery pieces served practical purposes, while others carried symbolic significance, incorporating decorative elements such as floral motifs, geometric arches, and inscriptions of the Divine Name.
In Fez, the production of blue pottery occupies a significant place in Moroccan society, particularly among the people of Fez. It is a symbol of luxury and precision and serves as a means of preserving memory and history.
