Introduced in 1969, the Hassan II Prize for Manuscripts aims to collect and digitise manuscripts and documents held by families and individuals who possess this heritage. It also seeks to provide Morocco’s national library and archives with copies of these valuable items.
The prize is divided into two categories:
1. Manuscript Books: This includes books, registers, personal diaries, scientific records, collections of fatwas or letters, collections of poems, songs, registers of malhun, and all other manuscripts, whether in the form of separate papers or bound records.
2. Manuscript Documents: This includes royal decrees, official or personal letters, notarial deeds, accounting books, academic certificates, genealogical certificates, and similar materials.
Summary of the 42nd Edition (2022):
• Implementation of Royal Decree No. 2.22.22, issued on 7 February 2022, conceing the reorganisation of the prize and an increase in its monetary value.
• 32 participants contributed 145 manuscripts and 109 documents.
• Eight honorary prizes and one national prize were distributed across eight regional centres.
• The prize ceremony took place on 7 March 2023 in the arcade of Bab Rouah.
